| Resume
Format Decision |
| Your first decision will be to choose
an appropriate resume format. There are three formats
for resumes: chronological, functional, and combination. |
| Reverse Chronological
Resume Format: |
|
This is the traditional resume style. It lists
your professional experience in reverse chronological
order (i.e. starting with your most recent position).
Most resumes are written in this format, and this
is also the format most employers are accustomed
to seeing. This style is especially effective in
the following cases:
- You have professional experience in the field
you are applying for.
- You can demonstrate measurable results from
their work activities (i.e., "…increased
territory sales by 40%")
- You've had impressive job titles, and/or have
worked for highly respected employers.
|
| Functional Resume Format: |
|
This style summarizes your experience while minimizing
your employment history. Employers are usually like
chronological resumes best, so you should have a
good reason for selecting a different format. The
functional format is often used in the following
cases:
- Career changers since it highlights transferable
work skills
- Recent grads who don't have a lot of experience
in their field, but do have relevant coursework
or training
- Those who fear age discrimination since it
minimizes dates
- Employees with gaps in their work history since
it minimizes dates
- Those who wish to emphasize skills that haven't
been used in recent work experiences
|
| Combination Resume Format: |
|
Combination resumes try to use the best parts of
the chronological and functional styles. Often they
include accomplishments under each position rather
than simply outlining duties and responsibilities.
Consider this style when:
- Position you’ve had involved a different job
descriptions and you wish to highlight transferable
skills
- You had internships or volunteer positions
that directly relate to your field of interest
Now select which of the above best applies to you:
